Amazing Spider-Man sample script – Not Quite One More Day

Sneak Peek:
Panel (3)
In J. Jonah Jameson’s office – Angle on Spider-Man hugging MJ.
JJJ:  PARKER…PETER, TAKE THE MASK OFF!
Panel (4)
All 3 of them. Spidey pulling off his mask.
JJJ: MARYJANE, WHY DON’T YOU GO SEE WHAT ROBBIE’S FOUND OUT.
Panel (5)
MJ and Pete…
MJ (to Peter): I SOFTENED HIM UP FOR YOU.
PETER: CLEARLY.

Keith’s Soapbox (rented from Stan the Man)

WELCOME, TRUE BELIEVERS…er, or rather, Honest Devotees!  What is this? This is my take on the “New Direction” for Amazing Spider-Man!

While conceptually I like Marvel’s 2008 decision to up-end Spider-Man’s world, there were a few issues I had with those few issues (of the comic that is).  Namely, these changes came about b/c Peter Parker made a deal with the Devil — not terribly heroic…and quite a bit out of character.

The point of Marvel’s change was to make Spider-Man empathetic to readers again.  I get that. But there’re better ways to work toward that (and even undo the marriage to MJ if they want), and the “One More Day” story wasn’t really it. Plus there were some plot holes and dangling storylines. And, for some reason, Peter seems “dumbed down” ever since — he no longer uses his great intellect.

So in these pages, I’m undangling the storylines, bringing back the FUN that Marvel wants in Spidey, bringing back old friends and enemies and even Spidey’s web shooters.

A crazy fanboy’s work?  Don’t be silly.  I’m an editor and a professional writer for nearly 20 years (but, clearly, I’ve much time on my hands).  And, hey, This Fanboy Reviewer dug the work I’ve done.

ENJOY!  Now on with the show….

Amazing Spider-Man 546

(**Be Sure to read MY version of One More Day Pt. 4 in an earlier blog!** Oh, and for those not in the know, here’s what you need to know: previously, Spider-Man revealed his secret I.D. to the world. Everyone knows Spidey is Peter Parker. J. Jonah Jameson is not happy about that. After all, he feels Peter Parker is like a son to him and can’t imagine that the “web-headed weasel” he despises and Peter could be the same person. Spider-Man is also part of the hero team known as The NEW Avengers. The Avengers Spidey belongs to are wanted by Tony Stark [aka, Iron Man], who leads the real Avengers, and Spidey and Iron Man don’t exactly get along these days either. OK, you’re all caught up.)

PAGE ONE
(1) SPLASH

Spider-Man’s holding up a car with one hand (What’s his strength-level these days? Hell, make it a Prius if need-be.). A crook of some kind is holding on to the open driver-side door for dear life, hanging over Spidey’s head.

In the foreground a couple of other bad guys are being webbed-up, of whom Spidey is handling with his free hand.

1 CAPTION: AFTER EVERYTHING THAT’S HAPPENED TO ME, I’M ACTUALLY HAPPY TO NOT BE SPIDER-MAN.

2 CAPTION: THERE’S JUST NO WAY I COULD— I MEAN, BETWEEN DEALING WITH EVERYTHING IN MY MARRIAGE, MY AUNT, BEING ON THE RUN…

PAGE TWO:
Panel (1)

1 CAPTION: …I DON’T KNOW HOW PETER DOES IT!

We see MaryJane in this panel, she’s off to the side of the action, possibly on a nearby rooftop or awning – safe from any peril!

Panel (2)
Spider-Man’s finishing with the bad guys, webbing the car now or something…

2 CAPTION: I WOULDN’T TALK TO HIM BACK AT THE HOTEL THIS MORNING.

Panel (3)
Spidey’s approached a businessman.

3 SPIDER-MAN: GOT A PEN AND PIECE OF PAPER?

4 CAPTION: NOT THAT I’M REALLY ANGRY AT HIM…I JUST COULDN’T TALK WITHOUT FEELING TEARS WELLING-UP AND MY THROAT GETTING TIGHT.

Panel (4)
Spidey is swinging up toward MJ. In the foreground we see he’s left A NOTE WHICH READS: From Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (No, I don’t care if you know my real name).

PAGE THREE
Panel (1)
Spidey’s with MJ, he’s lifted his mask and is kissing her on the cheek or forehead…either way, she’s leaning into the kiss.

1 CAPTION: I’M JUST TIRED OF CRYING. I’M TIRED OF WAKING UP EVERY DAY AND BEING ON THE RUN AND I’M TIRED…

2 MJ: NICE WORK, TIGER!

Panel (2)
Spidey’s got one arm wrapped around MJ, and they’re swinging off.

3 CAPTION: …OF NOT GETTING ENOUGH TIME TO BE WITH PETER…TO BE WITH SPIDER-MAN.

Panel (3)
They’re heading toward the Daily Bugle.

4 CAPTION: WOW. I GUESS I’VE ACCEPTED IT. MY HUSBAND IS SPIDER-MAN…AND SPIDER-MAN’S JUST AS MUCH MINE AS PETER IS.

Panel (4)
Landing on the Bugle rooftop

5 CAPTION: BUT SPIDER-MAN ALSO BELONGS TO THIS CITY, JUST LIKE PETER BELONGS TO THE REST OF HIS FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND HIS JOB…WHEN HE’S GOT ONE.

Panel (5)
Spidey’s removed his mask.

6 MJ CAPTION (at top) of panel: BUT THAT’S WHAT MARRIAGE IS, KNOWING AND TRUSTING YOU’RE GETTING AS MUCH OF SOMEONE AS YOU’RE GIVING OF YOURSELF…EVEN WHILE YOU SHARE THAT PERSON WITH OTHERS OR EVEN WITH THEIR OWN…OTHER INTERESTS.

7 PETER: DEEP IN THOUGHT TODAY?

8 MJ: YEAH. BUT ALL GOOD THOUGHTS FOR A CHANGE.

Panel (6)
The two of them…

9 PETER: YOU’RE SURE?

10 MJ: MM-HMM.

11 MJ: I MEAN, I’M STILL SHAKEN, I’M WORRIED FOR MAY…AND WE NEED TO CONTACT ANNA…BUT I’M FEELING A LITTLE BETTER ABOUT EVERYTHING. ESPECIALLY US.

PAGE FOUR:
Panel (1)
They’re kissing now.

1 PETER: ME TOO.

Panel (2)

2 MJ: OKAY. HOW LONG UNTIL YOU’RE BACK HERE?

3 PETER: IF EVERYTHING GOES WELL, WITHIN THE HOUR.

4 MJ: AND IF EVERYTHING DOESN’T GO WELL?

Panel (3)
Close on Pete, smirking.

4 PETER: TWENTY-FIVE TO THIRTY WITH GOOD BEHAVIOR.

5 PETER: BUT DON’T WORRY…THIS IS JUST A REQUEST. I’LL BE IN AND OUT…

Panel (4)

She’s walking toward the door which leads down from the rooftop…

6 PETER: AND WHAT ABOUT YOU? ARE YOU READY?

7 MJ: ARE YOU KIDDING? I USED TO TURN MEN LIKE J. JONAH JAMESON INTO JELLY FOR A LIVING. THIS’LL BE EASY!

Panel (5)
She’s through the door, Pete’s standing there smiling.

8 PETER: THAT’S MY GIRL!

PAGE FIVE:
Half-page splash, possibly POV from OUTside J. Jonah’s window.

We can see him in his office, Robbie sitting across from him, Betty Brant peeking in from the doorway…Spidey is swinging off (to somewhere the readers won’t find out about until later) just outside the building…

1 MJ CAPTION: I HOPE THIS GOES AS WE HOPED…

2 BETTY: MR. JAMESON…SOMEONE’S, UH, HERE TO SEE YOU.

3 JJJ: UNLESS IT’S THE NOBEL PRIZE COMMITTEE, I’M NOT INTERESTED.

Panel (2)
MJ has entered.

4 MJ: SORRY, TIGER, NOT QUITE THE JACKPOT YOU’D HOPED FOR!

Panel (3)
Robbie’s hugging MJ.

5 ROBBIE: GOOD TO SEE YOU, MARYJANE.

6 MJ: GOOD TO BE SEEN, ROBBIE.

7 JJJ: HRMPH!

Panel (4)
1 ROBBIE: ARE YOU SURE YOU SHOULD BE HERE? SOMEONE MIGHT RECOGNIZE—

2 MJ: OH, DON’T BE SILLY…THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO RECOGNIZE ME ANYMORE ARE YOU TWO. EVEN BETTY STARED AT ME BLANKLY FOR A WHILE…

3 MJ: I GUESS, EVEN BEFORE ALL THIS…MESS STARTED, I’VE BEEN KIND OF M.I.A.

PAGE SIX:
Panel (1)

MJ and Robbie looking toward JJJ.

1 JJJ (small): I WANT HER OUT.

2 ROBBIE: JONAH, IT’S NOT LIKE SHE’S SPIDER-M—

3 JJJ (O.P.): DON’T!…

Panel (2)
Angle on JJJ. MJ can be seen (Robbie too if you can work it)

3 JJJ: DON’T EVEN SAY HIS NAME, ROBBIE.

4 MJ: PETE—

Panel (3)
Jonah exacerbated.

5 JJJ: I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT! NOT “SPIDER-M—” NOT “PETE—”…NO NAMES! HE IS THE ONE OF WHICH WE DO NOT SPEAK!!

Panel (4)
MJ’s approached Jonah, a hand on his shoulder.

6 MJ: IT’S NICE TO SEE SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE.

Panel (5)
MJ’s kissing JJJ on the cheek. JJJ’s red-faced.

Panel (6)

7 MJ: SO, GENTLEMAN, CAN WE HAVE A TALK?

8 ROBBIE: MOST CERTAINLY…BUT ABOUT WHAT EXACTLY?

Panel (7)
We should probably be getting a good look at the surprise on the faces of Jonah and Robbie as MJ says the following…

9 MJ: A MAJOR EXCLUSIVE THAT WILL GUARANTEE THE BUGLE HUGE SALES AND A WAY FOR IT TO EARN BACK ITS STREET CRED…OR, AT LEAST, NEWS CRED. THANKS TO SPIDER-MAN.

10 MJ CAPTION 1: GOT ‘EM! NOW…

PAGE SEVEN:
Panel (1)
On a rooftop. Wolverine and Clint Barton stand on either side of Spider-Man, whose back is to us…we see he’s got a Web-pack on his back.

1 MJ CAPTION: …I WONDER HOW MY SPIDEY’S DOING…

2 WOLVERINE: YOU SURE ABOUT THIS?

3 SPIDER-MAN: NO.

4 CLINT: YOU CAN BACK OUT.

Panel (2)
Angle on Spidey, perhaps we see buildings reflected in his lenses…but not too clearly.

5 SPIDER-MAN: WON’T DO THAT.

Panel (3)
Wolverine and Spidey.

6 WOLVERINE: GOT YER CHEMICAL WHATSIT?

7 SPIDER-MAN: CHEMICAL “REAGENT.” YES.

Panel (4)
Wolvy and Clint.

8 WOLVERINE: WHY DON’TCHA JUST LET ME GO IN THERE?

9 CLINT: BECAUSE HE PROBABLY DOESN’T WANT ANYONE DEAD.

10 CLINT: WE CAN GO IN THERE WITH YOU. AVENGERS BACK EACH OTHER UP.

Panel (5)
All three of them.

11 SPIDER-MAN: I’M SWINGING IN, I’M SWINGING OUT. NOTHING’LL GO WRONG.

12 SPIDER-MAN: AND IF IT DOES…

Panel (6)
Larger panel here. We see now the 3 of them are on a rooftop across from Avengers Tower. Clint and Wolvy are facing Spidey. Spidey faces the building…

13 SPIDER-MAN: I DON’T WANT ANYONE ELSE GETTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS.*

14 CAPTION (bottom of page): *READERS NOTE: SPIDER-MAN, WOLVERINE, AND CLINT BARTON (ONCE KNOWN AS THE HERO HAWKEYE) ARE PART OF A TEAM OF SUPER-HEROES THEY CONSIDER “THE AVENGERS.” BUT IRON MAN, WHO BUILT AVENGERS TOWER, LEADS A TEAM OF AVENGERS ENDORSED BY THE GOVERNMENT, FROM WHICH SPIDEY’S AVENGERS ARE ON THE RUN.

PAGE EIGHT
Panel (1)
Angle on Jonah at his desk. He looks exhausted.

Panel (2)
We’re looking at MJ now…on the other side of his desk, Robbie leaning against a filing cabinet behind her, obviously in deep thought.

Panel (3)
Jonah’s gotten up from his desk, moving towards Robbie.

Panel (4)
Jonah looking at Robbie.

1 JJJ: WHAT DO YOU THINK?

2 ROBBIE: I THINK THEY’RE IN REAL TROUBLE, JONAH.

Panel (5)
3 JJJ (to MJ): AND THESE ARE JUST…JUST THE CRIMES YOU KNOW HE COMMITTED?

4 MJ: UM…YES. BOTH OF US RODE IN THAT AMBULANCE HE STOLE…BOTH OF US ASSAULTED THE OFFICER REALLY. BUT IT WAS—

Panel (6)
5 ROBBIE: TO SAVE MAY. WE UNDERSTAND, MJ.

6 ROBBIE: I’M GONNA MAKE A FEW CALLS, SEE IF THE CITY, THE POLICE, IF ANYONE IS PURSUING CHARGES.

Panel (7)
Robbie’s exiting. Jonah hasn’t moved.

7 JJJ: MARYJANE, I’M NOT CERTAIN WE CAN HELP — THE PAPER CAN’T DEFEND HIS ACTIONS — AND I’M UNCERTAIN IF I WANT TO TRY.

8 MJ: I DON’T BLAME YOU…BUT YOU WEREN’T THE ONLY ONE FOOLED…

PAGE NINE AND TEN (Double-Page Spread)

Long panel down left side of page nine, with three rows of six panels to its right. The panels can have MJ interspersed talking to JJJ any way you like, that is, add an extra panel (or panels), have the 3×6 panels be insets to a larger picture of her – whatever you feel works best.

Panel (1)
1 MJ CAPTION: …I SPENT YEARS NOT KNOWING WHAT HE WAS UP TO… PETER ALWAYS KEEPS SO MUCH TO HIMSELF.

2 MJ CAPTION: IT WASN’T UNTIL WE WERE ENGAGED THAT PETER TOLD ME THE TRUTH.*

3 CAPTION  (bottom of page): *SEE, I JUST UNDID THE MUCH-MALIGNED BUT BEAUTIFULLY DRAWN ’80s GRAPHIC NOVEL “PARALLEL LIVES.” THAT IS HOW YOU RET-CON!

Panel (2)
Angle from inside a shaftway. We see a window in BG, webbing holding it in place on the inside. Spidey’s foot is seen in mid-ground – it’s that last part of him which is crawling upwards through some metal vent or piping (which he clearly tore open). In foreground, some TINY electronic THINGIE is GLOWING RED…this is an intruder warning. (if it’s not clear in THIS panel what this object is, it will become clear as this Thingie will be seen again below…)

4 MJ CAPTION: HE INTERNALIZES EVERYTHING…EVEN MORE THAN I DO…

Panel (3)
Spidey’s crawling up in a very tight area of some kind – perhaps he’s in between a couple of walls. Through a seam in the tiling (rather than a vent) we see some (official) Avengers. A few SHIELD agents mill about too.

5 MJ CAPTION: …EVEN MORE THAN YOU DO.

6 JJJ CAPTION (SMALL LETTERING): HRMPHH!

Panel (4)
Spidey’s walking away from open elevator doors, no elevator in the shaft. SHIELD agents nearby have been webbed in place – they should look as if they might’ve been poised to shoot their weapons…but they can’t move. Webbing’s got them wrapped up all nice ‘n’ tight!

7 MJ CAPTION: MOST FIGHTS HE GETS INTO AS SPIDER-MAN ARE EASY…BUT INWARDLY, HE STRUGGLES….

panel 5 (split in half, diag.,  vertical, horizontal…whichever works best):
5a: a well-hidden, er, Thingie, somewhere by the floor is blinking RED. We should probably see Spidey’s foot or feet walking through this panel.

5b: Spidey’s reaching under his costume into his Spidey utility belt (yes, it’s the return of the Spidey utility belt!) and has taken out a vial of some kind.

Panel (6)
He’s webbed the vial to one wrist…

8 MJ CAPTION: YET, SOMEHOW, HE KEEPS HIS SENSE OF HUMOR, AND HIS NEED TO DO GOOD…

Panel (7)
Close shot of Spidey shooting his webbing out of his wrist, the vial clearly pouring into the hole where the webbing comes from…

9 MJ CAPTION: IN SPITE OF HOW HE FEELS TEMPORARY FATHER-FIGURE TONY STARK* BETRAYED HIM…

10 CAPTION (bottom of panel): *AKA, THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN!!

Panel (8)
Spidey stands, hands on hips, looking at a blank wall. That’s right, we canNOT see the webbing he just shot out. FYI: he STILL has a web-pack on his back.

11 SPIDER-MAN: PERFECT!

12 MJ CAPTION: AND IN SPITE OF AUNT MAY DISCOVERING HIS SECRET, HIS BEATING BY MORLUN…

Panel (9)
He’s falling down an elevator shaftway, shooting a web-line at something below we cannot see, pulling off the web pack on his back with the other hand. There are myriad ALARM lights (more electronic Thingies) in the shaftway.

13 MJ CAPTION: …WE THOUGHT HE DIED, JONAH!*

14 CAPTION (bottom of panel): *SEE JMS’s RUN ON AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

SFX: WOOP-WOOP-WOOP

Panel (10)
Spidey’s casually altered his trajectory with the web-line, and is sling-shotting toward a ventilation shaft.

15 MJ CAPTION: BUT, PETER ALWAYS SAYS, “THE OL’ PARKER LUCK – IT’LL NEVER FAIL YOU.” OF COURSE, HE MEANS BAD LUCK!

SFX: WOOP-WOOP-WOOP

Panel (11)
We see Spider-Man peeking down through a ceiling tile in some sort of control room, where SHIELD agents are exiting.

16 MJ CAPTION: BUT YOU KNOW HIM…AND I KNOW HIM…

SFX: WOOP-WOOP-WOOP

Panel (12)
A SHIELD guy is standing there with a big, crazy-looking stop-the-super-hero gun aimed at Spider-Man, and his hand is on some kind of alarm lever on the wall, which he’s not yet pulled.

17 SHIELD AGENT (O.P.): Ahem.

INSET: Spidey’s hand – UN-GLOVED – shoots webbing.

SFX: WOOP-WOOP-WOOP

Panel (13)
Spidey’s wearing a SHIELD jacket. He’s got his mask on. He’s giving a wave to the SHIELD agent w/one hand, having taken the guy’s SHIELD cap w/the other.

18 MJ CAPTION: THAT MAN IS BLESSED. AS MUCH HARDSHIP AS HE’S GONE THROUGH…

SFX: WOOP-WOOP-WOOP

Panel (14)
Peter’s joined other SHIELD agents – sans Spidey mask – in a hallway, Ms. Marvel’s flying over them…

19 MJ CAPTION: HE STILL GOES…

Panel (15)
All of the SHIELD agents run one way, Peter’s spun around, heading in the opposite direction. One SHIELD agent’s noticed this…

SFX: WOOP-WOOP-WOOP

Panel (16)
Empty hallway…

20 MJ CAPTION: AND GOES…BUT HE NEVER STOPS DOING WHAT HE DOES….

SFX: WOOP-WOOP-WOOP

Panel (17)
A crowd of SHIELD agents behind him, Peter runs and leaps through the corridor.

21 MJ CAPTION : AS MUCH AS HE’D LIKE TO GET OUT.

SFX: WOOP-WOOP-WOOP

Panel (18)
In the lobby of the building, Peter’s running to the exit, leaping through two Avengers (Wonder-Man and Ares), shooting a web-line…

22 MJ CAPTION : HE WON’T STOP BEING SPIDER-MAN…

SFX: WOOP-WOOP-WOOP

Panel (19)
Still trying to avoid people, SHIELD agents, and Avengers, Peter’s shooting another webline, and, looking similar to Panel 10, he’s got the web-line taught, as if about to SLINGSHOT himself…

23 MJ CAPTION: BECAUSE NOT ONLY DOES HE DO IT WELL….

PAGE ELEVEN
SPLASH (with insets) or 2/3 SPLASH w/smaller panels:
Peter has sling-shot himself out of the tower and nearly across half the city.

1 MJ CAPTION: HE DOES IT FOR THE RELEASE…

INSETS 1-3: Peter’s swinging into condemned buildings, under bridges within the city (such as those by Grand Central or the one on 5th ave in midtown), and basically disappearing. (Should he be ditching the SHIELD clothing in the first inset?)

INSET 4: Either under the above or with a call-out pointing at the entrance of Avengers Tower:
Ms. Marvel, Wonder-Man, and Ares looking out of the lobby with anger…he’s gone.

INSET 5:
Wolverine and Clint still on that rooftop…

2 WOLVERINE: WELL THAT WAS PRETTY MUCH AS EXPECTED.

3 CLINT: NOT TRUE.

4 CLINT: HE GOT AWAY.

PAGE TWELVE
This page: shots of Jonah and MJ talking – as dynamic as you want to make it.

Panel (1)
MJ in JJJ’s office, Jonah, annoyed/bored.

1 MJ: AND HE DOES IT FOR HIS FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES. AND YOU KNOW FOR A FACT, IN SPITE OF WHAT YOU’VE SAID, AND WHAT HE’S DONE–

Panel (2)

2 MJ: –THAT INCLUDES YOU, JONAH.

Panel (3)

3 JJJ: …

Panel (4)

4 JJJ: LOGICALLY, I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE SAYING IS TRUE, MJ…I REALLY DO…

Panel (5)

5 JJJ: BUT THE BETRAYAL DOESN’T JUST GO TO THE HEART OF MY RELATIONSHIP WITH PETER…

Panel (6)

6 JJJ: OR MY HATRED OF SPIDER-MAN…

7 JJJ: WHO, TRUTH BE TOLD, I NEVER REALLY HATED ALL THAT MUCH…

Panel (7)

8 JJJ: THE PROBLEM IS HE DESTROYED THIS PAPER, MJ…

9 JJJ: HE TOOK THE LAST HOWEVER MANY YEARS AND, IN ONE FELL SWOOP, MADE EVERYTHING I’VE DONE, EVERYTHING SO MANY PEOPLE WORKED SO HARD AT, AND – LIKE THAT

PAGE THIRTEEN
Panel (1)

1 JJJ: –MADE IT DISAPPEAR! WHAT KIND OF PERSON DOES THAT*?

2 MJ: BUT PETER AND I ARE STILL HERE. WE’RE STILL YOUR FRIENDS, WE’LL STILL MAKE PLANS WITH YOU AND MARLA AND TURN A BLIND EYE WHEN YOU CHEAT AT BRIDGE…

* Spidey fans, that one’s a brain teaser, ay?

Panel (2)

3 MJ: …AND WE’RE STILL PEOPLE WHO NEED YOUR HELP. AND EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO US, TO SPIDER-MAN, FROM HERE ON — THE BUGLE GETS THE EXCLUSIVE. WE’RE INCLUDING PUBLISHING RIGHTS, SHARED MOVIE RIGHTS, AND A CHANCE TO STICK IT TO IRON MAN…

Panel (3)
Angle on JJJ, mulling.

4 MJ CAPTION: OKAY…LET HIM SEE IT…HE KNOWS THERE’S A STORY – AND MONEY – HERE…

Panel (4)

5 JJJ: I AM MOST DEFINITELY NOT A FAN OF IRON MAN’S AFTER THAT “CIVIL WAR”…AND WHAT HAPPENED TO CAPTAIN AMERICA* BECAUSE OF HIM…AND I’M NOT THRILLED WITH HOW HE AND SHIELD HANDLED THAT WORLD WAR HULK DEBACLE.

6 JJJ: …BUT THAT DOESN’T CHANGE THE FACT THAT I CAN’T HARBOR AND ABET FUGITIVES….

7 CAPTION (bottom of panel): *The Civil War was a big, all-out fight between heroes in the Marvel Universe seen in recent books…which resulted in the apparent death of Captain America.

Panel (5)
Talking to himself now…he should be walking around/pacing his office from here on….

8 MJ CAPTION: …BUT HE ALSO LOVES US.

9 JJJ: ALTHOUGH, IF YOU’RE BOTH SUPPLYING INFORMATION TO THE PAPER, YOU’RE NOT FUGITIVES, NOT TO THE BUGLE AT LEAST — YOU’RE “PROTECTED SOURCES.”

Panel (6)

10 MJ CAPTION: C’MON, JONAH, DON’T LET ME DOWN…

11 JJJ: BAH! WHO’M I KIDDING? EVERYONE FROM THE NEW AVENGERS TO WHATEVER CREEP BECOMES GREEN GOBLIN THIS WEEK WILL BE KNOCKING DOWN THESE DOORS TO GET TO YOU TWO!
PAGE FOURTEEN

Panel (1)
JJJ’s behind his desk by now, behind the large window.

1 JJJ: BUT, HECK, THAT’S NOT MUCH OF A CHANGE…I CAN’T COUNT HOW MANY TIMES I’VE HAD THIS @%!@! WINDOW REPLACED.

Panel (2)
JJJ’s moved past the desk now…but should wind his way back by panel 5…

2 JJJ: AND THE HUGE BOOST IN SALES SHOULD COVER THE LEGAL FEES, BECAUSE — OOOH BOY! – WE’RE DEFINITELY GOING TO BE INVITING TROUBLE…AND STRAIN THE SYSTEM, SEEING HOW MUCH WEIGHT IT CAN HOLD…

3 MJ CAPTION: THAT’S WHAT I WAS WAITING TO HEAR!

Panel (3)

4 JJJ: OK, MJ…HERE’S THE DEAL I’M PREPARED TO OFFER…

5 JJJ: I DON’T JUST WANT YOUR STORY ABOUT MAY, SPIDER-MAN, ABOUT THE TWO OF YOU AS A COUPLE…

6 JJJ: I DON’T JUST WANT PETE’S PICTURES, HIS “SUPER-HERO” CONNECTIONS…

Panel (4)

7 JJJ: I WANT TO KNOW EVERY MOVE BY HIS LITTLE UNDERGROUND AVENGERS. I WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT TEAM, EVERY VILLAIN, ALIEN INVASION, AND RUNAWAY TRAIN THEY STOP!

8 JJJ: I WANT TO KNOW WHEN SPIDER-MAN THINKS HE’S HAD A GOOD DAY OR A BAD DAY…I WANT NOT JUST THE EXCLUSIVES YOU’RE OFFERING BUT AN EXCLUSIVE ON EVERY PART OF SPIDER-MAN’S LIFE!

9 JJJ: BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY…YOU KNOW WHAT I WANT FIRST?

Panel (5)
JJ’s standing at his window again…

10 JJJ: …AN APOLOGY!

Panel (6)
Spidey’s dropped in front of the window.

11 SPIDER-MAN: NO PROBLEM, TRIPLE J!

PAGE FIFTEEN:
Panel (1)

1 JJJ: PARKER! GET IN HERE!!

Panel (2)
Spidey’s come through the window…MJ’s come over and is kissing him on his cheek (either on the mask or she’s lifted the mask – either way)

2 MJ: MADE IT BACK IN ONE PIECE, TIGER.

3 SPIDEY: I DO MY BEST.

Panel (3)
4 JJJ: OKAY, BREAK IT UP. THAT’S ENOUGH.

5 JJJ:  PARKER…PETER, TAKE THE MASK OFF!

Panel (4)
All 3 of them. Spidey pulling off his mask.

6 JJJ: MARYJANE, WHY DON’T YOU GO SEE WHAT ROBBIE’S FOUND OUT.

Panel (5)
MJ and Pete…

7 MJ: I SOFTENED HIM UP FOR YOU.

PETER: CLEARLY.

Panel (6)

MJ exiting.

8 MJ: KEEP IT CIVIL GENTLEMAN…

9 MJ CAPTION: PLEASE, PETER, DON’T WEB HIM TO THE CEILING…

PAGE SIXTEEN:
Panel (1)
MJ’s exited the office…

1 MJ CAPTION: NOW I JUST HAVE TO HOPE ROBBIE’S GOT SOME GOOD NEWS…

Panel (2)
Larger panel.

MJ’s at Robbie’s office…he’s on the phone…

2 ROBBIE: OKAY, TOM. YES…I BELIEVE I CAN RELAY THE MESSAGE…THANKS. YOU TOO.

Panel (3)
Robbie’s hung up the phone…he’s looking at MJ.

3 ROBBIE: GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS. WHERE SHOULD I START?

4 MJ: WHICHEVER WON’T MAKE ME CRY.

5 ROBBIE: OKAY…

Panel (4)
6 ROBBIE: HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS. MOST OF THE CRIMES YOU’VE COMMITTED, INCLUDING GRAND THEFT, NOBODY SEEMS TO CARE ABOUT. THAT IS, THE HOSPITALS INVOLVED TURNED A BLIND EYE ONCE THE POLICE REPORT CAME BACK WITH THE FINGERPRINTS…

Panel (5)
7 ROBBIE: SPIDER-MAN’S GOOD WILL OF THE PAST GOES A LONG WAY WITH PEOPLE WHO WORK IN HOSPITALS.

8 ROBBIE: NOW THE BAD NEWS…

Panel (6)

9 ROBBIE: THE POLICE DETECTIVE, AND THE DEPARTMENT IN GENERAL, ISN’T TOO HAPPY WITH A REGISTERED HERO ASSAULTING AN OFFICER, TYING HIM UP, AND FLEEING THE SCENE OF A CRIME…

Panel (7)

10 MJ: THIS…SOUNDS LIKE THE PART WHERE YOUR BAD NEWS GETS WORSE.

11 ROBBIE: THEY WANT THERE TO BE A RECKONING

12 ROBBIE: AND IT’S GOING TO COME ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. NOT ONLY IS THE NYPD GOING TO COME LOOKING FOR BOTH OF YOU, AND BRING YOU BOTH – SEPARATELY – TO TRIAL FOR YOUR CRIMES, BUT THEY’RE GOING AFTER STARK AND THE SENATE…

Panel (8)

12 MJ: I’M NOT SURE I SEE—

13 ROBBIE: THEY’RE PLANNING ON HOLDING THOSE WHO PASSED THE SUPER-HERO REGISTRATION ACT ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT PETER DID…AS, AFTER ALL, HE WAS INITIALLY UNDER THEIR CHARGE.

14 ROBBIE: BY APPLYING PRESSURE TO THEM AND STARK, THEN STARK, THE AVENGERS, AND THE INITIATIVE WILL ALL WORK HARDER TO MAKE CERTAIN PETER PARKER IS BROUGHT TO JUSTICE AND HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

Panel (9)
Angle on a worried MJ.

15 MJ CAPTION: MEPHISTO ARE YOU THERE? I THINK I’M READY TO MAKE A DEAL?…HELLO?….!@$!

PAGE SEVENTEEN
Panel (1)
Peter’s getting his city clothes back on over his Spider-Man outfit. JJ is leaning on his hands on his desk, head down, frustrated…

1 JJJ: I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN.

2 PETER:  I DO.  YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY.

Panel (2)

3 PETER: OR, MORE PRECISELY, YOU WANT TO KNOW IF I KEPT IT FROM YOU BECAUSE I DIDN’T LIKE YOU, DIDN’T TRUST YOU, OR BECAUSE I WAS PROTECTING YOU.

Panel (3)
Close on JJ. An eyebrow raised.

4 JJJ: SEEMS AS GOOD A PLACE AS ANY TO START.

Panel (4)
Peter explaining to JJ…JJ concerned, honest…

5 PETER: YOU GOTTA REMEMBER, JJ, I WAS A KID WHEN I FIRST WALKED IN HERE…I LOST MY UNCLE, I HAD TO TAKE CARE OF AUNT MAY—

6 JJJ: HOW IS MAY NOW? MARYJANE SAID THINGS ARE LOOKING…UP?

Panel (5)
On Pete…

7 PETER: WHAT? OH. YEAH…I MEAN, I GUESS. NEW DOCTORS. I STOPPED BY ON THE WAY HERE… THEY SAID THEY’RE “SOMEWHAT HOPEFUL” – WHICH IS, UH, ACTUALLY A BIG IMPROVEMENT.

8 PETER: …THANKS FOR, UM, ASKING.

Panel (6)
JJJ in disbelief…

8 JJJ: YOU REALLY DON’T GET IT DO YOU, PARKER?

9 PETER: WHAT?

10 JJJ: YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M ABOUT, DO YOU? NO UNDERSTANDING OF WHO I AM OR WHY I MAKE THE CHOICES I MAKE AND DO THE THINGS I DO. YOU’RE SO BUSY….

PAGE EIGHTEEN
Panel (1)
JJ gesticulating wildly, Peter looking away.

1 JJJ: ….BUSY WITH YOUR “WOE IS ME,” AND YOUR “OH, HOW I MUST CARRY THE WORLD ON MY SHOULDERS…SOMEONE HAS TO, MIGHT AS WELL BE SPIDER-MAN!”

2 PETER (small): YOU DON’T KNOW ME.

Panel (2)
JJJ all high and mighty…

3 JJJ: I’M NOT STUPID, PARKER. I’VE SEEN YOU WITH YOUR HANGDOG LOOK, AND THE WORRY ON YOUR FACE WHEN I DIDN’T GIVE YOU THE AMOUNT YOU EXPECTED FOR YOUR PICTURES.

4 JJJ: NO, I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT YOU WERE UP TO BACK THEN…BUT I’VE HAD A FEW WEEKS TO SIT BACK AND THINK ABOUT IT.

Panel (3)
JJJ walking around Peter, looking like a know-it-all…

5 JJJ: I KNOW HOW IT STARTED. I KNOW YOU JUST CAME IN HERE TO MAKE SOME MONEY. AND, LET’S NOT KID AROUND HERE, I EXPLOITED YOU –

Panel (4)
Close on JJJ, smiling,

6 JJJ: — BEAUTIFULLY I MIGHT ADD.

Panel (5)
JJ’s serious now.

7 JJJ: BUT AFTER THE TIMES YOU CAME TO ME FOR SOME EXTRA CASH, AFTER THE WEDDING AND HOW THE BUGLE SUPPORTED YOUR BOOK TOUR…AFTER I EVEN GAVE YOU THE OCCASIONAL BIG STORY OVERSEAS OR IN METROPOLIS*…

8 *CAPTION: IF I’VE GOT MY FACTS STRAIGHT, THOSE LAST TWO REFERENCES WOULD BE SPIDER-MAN VS. WOLVERINE AND SUPERMAN VS. SPIDER-MAN – BOTH FROM MANY YEARS BACK!

Panel (6)
JJ’s interrupted by Pete here – and Peter’s pissed-off…

9 JJJ: AFTER ALL OF THAT—

10 PETER: YEAH, JJ– AFTER I CONSIDERED YOU THE STEP-FATHER I NEVER WANTED, SAVED YOU FROM MONSTERS, SAVED YOUR SON…YOUR WIFE…AFTER ALL THE THINGS SPIDER-MAN DID FOR YOU AND PETER PARKER WOULD DO FOR YOU…

Panel (7)
Peter’s getting in Jonah’s face now…

11 PETER: …YOU CONTINUED TO USE THE BUGLE AS YOUR SOAPBOX FOR ALL THINGS ANTI-SPIDER-MAN!…KNOWING, AT THE LEAST, THAT PETE AND SPIDEY WERE FRIENDS.

12 PETER: IS THAT WHAT FRIENDS DO? EVEN FRIENDS OF FRIENDS?

PAGE NINETEEN:

Panel (1)
Jonah honest. Peter confused.

1 PETER : AND WHAT WAS IT ALL FOR?  YOUR JEALOUSY?  A DEEP-SEATED HATRED FOR THOSE WHO STAND-UP FOR THEMSELVES?  SOME KIND OF LOSS?  SOME INCIDENT FROM YOUR PAS—

2 JJJ: WHAT IF IT IS ONE OF THOSE?

3 PETER: –WHAT?

Panel (2)

Jonah, still honest…Peter a little embarrassed.

4 JJJ: WHAT I MEAN IS…PETER…YOU’RE A YOUNG GUY. YOU DON’T HAVE THE WORLDLY EXPERIENCE I HAVE. BUT, DID YOU HEAR WHAT YOU JUST SAID?

5 PETER: I—

Panel (3)
JJ’s sitting either on the desk by Peter, or in another nearby chair…

6 JJJ: YOU’VE ENOUGH SENSE TO KNOW…TO KNOW THAT WHATEVER MAKES ME RANT AND RAVE IS NOT ABOUT YOU – OR SPIDER-MAN.

7 JJJ: SO IF YOU’VE ENOUGH SENSE TO KNOW THAT—

Panel (4)
JJ looking at Peter, looking into Peter…he’s finally come to an understanding with himself AND Pete.

8 JJJ: — SHOULDN’T YOU HAVE ENOUGH SENSE NOT TO ASK?

9 JJJ: AND, IT OCCURS TO ME NOW, I GUESS WE ALL NEED TO HAVE OUR SECRETS.

Panel (5)
Peter’s taking that in.

Panel (6)
Peter growing softer again here, looking to JJJ.

10 PETER: ARE YOU SUGGESTING…WE HAVE A MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING?

11 PETER: I MEAN, I WON’T PRESS YOU ON YOUR “WHY” AND YOU DON’T PRESS ME ON MINE?

Panel (7)
JJ leans in towards him, almost smiling…

12 JJJ: AND WE JUST MOVE ON FROM HERE. WE LOOK FORWARD!

13 PETER: O-OKAY.

Panel (8)
They hug – manly hug.

14 JJJ: AND WE’LL SEE WHAT THE BUGLE CAN DO FOR YOU, MJ – AND SPIDER-MAN!

PAGE TWENTY
Panel (1)
Establishing of Avengers tower…it’s DUSK now.

1 MS. MARVEL (O.P.): ACCORDING TO THE CAMERAS, THE ALERT SIGNALS…EVERYTHING – HE WAS IN HERE.

Panel (2)
We see Ms. Marvel is talking to Iron Man in Iron Man/Tony’s quarters.

2 IRON MAN: AND YOU SAID HE HAD NOTHING IN HIS ARMS…IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE HE’S DISTURBED ANYTHING…

3 MS. MARVEL: MAYBE HE WAS JUST LOOKING FOR YOU–

Panel (3)

4 MS. MARVEL: — OR FOR SOME ATTENTION.

5 IRON MAN: HE’S ON THE RUN, HE’S GOT TEAMMATES, A WIFE AND A DYING AUNT TO CONSIDER. THE LAST THING HE WANTS IS ATTENTION. BUT I WONDER….

Panel (4)
From inside Iron Man’s mask (that is, Iron Man’s POV), we can tell he’s scanning the room. In the mask it might read “INFRARED” and other notes on-screen…

6 IRON MAN: SCANNING NOW…

Panel (5)
Still Iron Man’s POV…he’s turned his head a bit…

7 MS. MARVEL (O.P.): ANYTHING YET?

Panel (6)
IM’s POV again. He’s almost looking at the area over his bed where it seemed that Spidey was shooting his webbing….We can see just the edge of something on the wall – it should be COLORED in a FLUORESCENT or something to stand out in the scan…

8 IRON MAN: I DO BELIEVE….

PAGE TWENTY-ONE:
½-Page Splash:

We see clearly what Iron Man found on the wall (this does NOT have to be from his POV, just keep the same coloring scheme on the wall)…

SFX (in webbed writing on Stark’s wall): WE NEED TO TALK – FATHER FIGURE TO SON-YOU-NEVER-WANTED.

1 IRON MAN: –I’VE FOUND SOMETHING!

Panel (2)
Angle on Ms. Marvel and Iron Man, she’s looking at him…he’s looking at the wall still.

2 MS. MARVEL: WHAT IS IT?

3 IRON MAN: JUST A MESSAGE FOR ME…LETTING ME KNOW HOW GOOD HE IS, AND WHAT HE CAN DO…

Panel (3)
Ms. Marvel’s looking at IM now, his arm is raised toward the wall…

4 MS. MARVEL: HE LEFT YOU AN INVISIBLE MESSAGE?

5 IRON MAN: YES. THE MAN IS A SCIENTIFIC GENIUS.

6 MS. MARVEL: HE’S A BOY. AND ALL OF THAT JUST TO…SHOW-BOAT?

Panel (4)
IM’s now looking at Ms. Marvel, he’s shooting some gas at the wall – obviously erasing the message.

7 IRON MAN: SEEMS THAT WAY…

8 MS. MARVEL: I GUESS THIS MEANS YOU DON’T WANT FORENSICS IN HERE…

9 IRON MAN: COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. I’M GOING BACK TO THE S.H.I.E.L.D.  HELICARRIER. PARKER HAS HIS WAY OF CONTACTING PEOPLE…

PAGE TWENTY-TWO
Panel (1)
Peter, MJ, Jonah, Robbie…in JJ’s office…Again, note: outside, it’s dusk/early evening.

1 IRON MAN CAPTION: …I’VE GOT MINE!

2 ROBBIE: THE WAY I SEE IT, THE BUGLE CANNOT FAVOR YOU TWO. WE COVER YOUR STORIES – WHETHER THEY BE TALES OF DERRING-DO OR THOSE OF YOUR VERY SURVIVAL – LIKE WE WOULD ANYTHING ELSE–

3 JJJ: ONE-HUNDRED PERCENT IMPARTIAL!

4 MJ CAPTION: I HOPE WE CAN SURVIVE THIS…

Panel (2)
Everyone’s look at JJ, not believe what they just heard him say…

5 JJJ: WHAT? I’M TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF!

6 MJ: AND HOW DO WE STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOU WHILE IN HIDING?

7 MJ CAPTION: …BECAUSE, WHAT LIES AHEAD ASIDE…I ALWAYS WORRY WHEN THINGS SEEM TO BE…

Panel (3)
Peter grabbing head in pain. HUGE spider-sense waves coming from his head…

8 MJ CAPTION: …GETTING BACK TO NORM—

9 PETER: AGGHGH!

10 MJ: PETER! WHAT—WHAT IS IT?

11 PETER: MY SPIDER-SENSE…LIKE SOMEONE’S FOUND ONE OF MY TRACERS AND TURNED IT UP!!

Panel (4)
Peter’s approached the window, is pulling off his civvies to become Spider-Man…

*Artist Note: Big Spider-Sense waves should still be shooting from around his head.

12 ROBBIE: ANYTHING WE SHOULD DO?

13 PETER: J-JUST WAIT HERE…I’VE GOT TO FOLLOW IT…STOP WHOEVER’S FIGURED OUT HOW TO C-CONTACT ME THIS WAY!!

14 IRON MAN CAPTION: I’M CERTAIN….

15 MJ CAPTION: I’M CERTAIN…

Panel (5)
Larger panel here…half-page?

Iron Man, with the face mask up, is sitting at a console, feet up. He’s holding some device in his hand which is clearly emitting a powerful (Spidey) signal. Behind him we see the SHIELD army in action, readying weaponry and the like…

16 IRON MAN: …SPIDER-MAN AND I WILL GET A CHANCE TO TALK VERY SOON.

17 MJ CAPTION: …EVERYTHING’LL WORK ITSELF OUT.

CAPTION:  NEXT: SPIDER-MAN VS. S.H.I.E.L.D. OR “HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE OL’ SHELLHEAD.”
